Once there was a Snowman

Hollywood has the concept of Hell all wrong. Completely wrong. It is not a fiery burning torturous place. It is probably covered in 3 feet of snow with lots of wind and constant snowing.

Needless to say, the weather has been one of those fun things for the week. It's been pretty much snowing for the full week with the temperature from 10-25 degrees. We got excited when we saw that it warmed up to 24 degrees.

New York or at least Buffalo does not really have a good concept of plowing the roads. They plow half of them and leave an 3 inches of snow that turn into some great lovely slush. And then throw all the snow up on the sidewalks. We have about 8 inches or something all around and snow piles from 2ft to 4.5ft. So we do a lot of trudging through snow. I've been wearing 2 layers of socks all week.

I have survived about 3 snowstorms this week and the rest of the time it was just lightly snowing while we were walking around. Sadly, people take pity on us when it's 12 degrees and a snowstorm but not enough to let us in the house to teach them. They just think we are crazy for being outside. Which is probably true but what can you do? Gotta spread that Gospel.

It was one of those weeks where Satan was throwing those curveballs. I'm sure I will figure out the significance of everything later but at the time it was quite frustrating. We had the most interesting exchange where Elder Semadeni and I were in their area last Tuesday. Which was kind of a dumb idea since we were both new to the area. We had a great plan until he got sick and we spent the morning twiddling our thumbs. The other two took the truck and went out and about. But later that evening we had a dinner appointment. Well, all the buses were completely off schedule so we ended up walking a couple miles in a snowstorm to a dinner appointment that was actually extremely awkwardly for the other Elders. Oops. So we walked to the nearby Library. Which was closed on Tuesdays (random day to be closed). Then we took the bus to go back to the apartment which actually only took us half way but neither of us knew that. So we got stuck at a Tim Hortons (coffee/donut shop) and called the other elders and just begged to be picked up because it was still snowing and 16 degrees. They picked us up an hour later...

On Monday night we went on a nice double date with the sister missionaries. That was quite funny. It was a dinner appointment with this senior lady but she wasn't feeling well so she had her senior guy friend take us to this buffet, pay for us and leave. We were like "ummm... I guess we just hurry and eat..." But it was like 2 Elders and 2 sisters so we just laughed about how it seemed like we were just really awkwardly dressed up for some double date. I figured that was a good story for the future years.

Another night we were bus-ing/walking down the ghetto main street to the Hospital for an appointment with a guy in the Pysch ward. We ran into a drunk guy who was asking us for money so that he could "Buy a Sammich" because he hadn't eaten in an hour. Poor guy. He addressed our American heritage for sympathy.

We are currently planning an Asian wedding for our local chapel. It is quite interesting. GouJian is getting married to his fiancee who flies in on Dec 24 and the wedding is that Saturday. He is quite... nervous and clueless of what to do. So between the missionaries and Relief Society, we should be able to get this planned out for him. Plus he is having it at the chapel. It is just a really funny situation altogether. GuoJian also very much fits the stereotype of Asian drivers.... He gave us a ride home and if it was 14 degrees outside, I would have walked. haha It was quite scary.

Stephen continues to blow us away. He just keeps telling us about certain doctrine that he has come to the conclusion through his studies of religion must be correct. Which happens to be our Doctrine. And we happen to be the only ones that believe that. He was definitely prepared. It's cool to see how someone who studied all these different types of religions to find out what has to be correct, finds our doctrine. He is either spot on with our doctrine or it's something that no one has even really thought of and there is no actually doctrine on it. He is a smart guy for sure. Definitely prepared to hear the message. His kids are continually entertaining. We sit with them at Sacrament meeting and they draw things for us and stuff. I feel bad when they aren't quiet but they aren't my kids so I don't know when to ask them to be quiet and such! haha it's just funny.

Andrea (asian investigator) is hilarious. We continue to send her scriptures via text as she is on "vacation" now but she is still writing her last final paper which I think was due today. So hopefully she got that in! She also fits the stereotype with Asian studying. 24/7. Hardcore. She is too funny though!

Everyone but me has been sick in our apartment complex. Elder Allen (my companion) got sick on Monday, Elder Semadeni (ZL) got sick on Tuesday during our transfer, and "Brown" Allen (E. Semadeni's companion) got sick on Thursday. But my fortress of immunity so far keeps me going. Well, I haven't been sick enough to stop going.

Last night we had to go downtown to meet with our new Ward Mission Leader to go through his binder full of things and explain things. It was just Elder "White" Allen (my companion) and me. We took the subway downtown and it turns out that the phone fell out of E. Allen's pocket in a member's car on the way home from Church. So we had no communication or way to find out bus schedules (Sunday has different schedules). Needless to say, our adventure home really sucked as we were still dressed for church (Hadn't been home to the apartment yet) and it was windy and cold. Plus we had no way of calling for a ride. So we got a fun little walk in the cold and were lucky to hop a bus for a portion of the way until we randomly dropped in on a member and asked for a ride. Which he was very willing to give (Eternal blessings for him.)

On the spiritual note, when we were at the psych ward at the hospital we were talking to our biopolar investigator who was in there because his medicine got messed up so they had to put him under surveillance until they know that his medicine is back in order. Nice guy. A little odd. But he just randomly opens up the book of Mormon for us to read with him. Just happens to be exactly what I needed to hear right then. Scriptures do that for ya.

Elder Allen is from AZ. He attended Utah State. Is going back there after his mission. He is going for Political Science/Economy degree or something along those lines. He is crazy smart and just absorbs things. Plus he can tell you exactly where every scripture is all the time. He is middle child with an older sister and a younger sister. His family currently lives in Wyoming. His mom also teaches and we have a similar backstory with that. We currently live in a two person apartment but the other elders are in the same complex just at the other end so Elder Allen likes to go over there and bug them at night so it's KIND OF still a 4 person apartment set up. Kind of.

The ward is awesome. Everyone is just young and with young little families. Big primary. Cute kids. I think there is like 4 youth in the ward. If that. There is 8 missionaries in the ward because it is huge geographically and has over 700 members. Only 150 weekly attendance. Lots of problems with people falling through the cracks. But they are doing a huge push to try to fix and reduce that. Everyone here also wants us to call them by their first name. Because they thing that "Brother Taylor" is their dad so just call him Levi. Which is pretty much what they all say. Which makes figuring out who is who a lot harder as I'm bad enough with names. Now I have to know first and last names ha.

Other than that all is well. It's freezing cold. I'm moving to St. George or anything farther South when I get home. Anywhere warm. It wouldn't be tooo bad if it weren't for the constant falling snow and the wind that picks up and flings snow and cold at your face. Goes right through you. So far I haven't lost a toe yet. No promises though. I'm looking forward to tracting in the 0 degree weather.... haha!

Exciting North Buffalo

Well, Here I am in North Buffalo. The city is mostly Kenmore. But the area is called North Buffalo. It's weird. The ward covers all of the city of Buffalo, Kenmore, Eggert, and Tonawanda. It's a decent sized ward! Definitely no longer in a Branch like situation. The ward probably averages around 150 people attendance. So it's a good sized.

My apartment is an actually missionary apartment. I was spoiled with the first one in Cheektowaga. That is for sure. We have to pay for Laundry. It's not too bad, 1$ per wash. I just have to hunt down quarters. The apartment definitely needs a little bit of a clean up and my companion was sick this morning so I took that as an opportunity to start doing some cleaning. I got a little bit less cluttered but more to go. The Zone leaders who are in our district and right next to us in the area also have an apartment in the same complex. That is nice because we can go with them to get groceries and stuff.

Bus passes are the bomb.com. We bike a lot. But it's nice to be able to catch a bus here and there also. Definitely interesting too because we get the opportunity to talk to people on the bus. No luck yet but it will happen. Definitely get to meet some interesting people.

My area is basically Buffalo city but the residential area. So it's not quite suburbs but isn't like downtown. Well, the part we spend our time in isn't really downtown. The church building itself is definitely downtown.

This ward is awesome. So our area covers a lot of the residential area that is constantly moving. Because we are inbetween University of Buffalo North and South Campus. So we have a ton of college students. These are the ones that are becoming dentists and doctors. It's great! Because we have some seriously chill young adult but married nice people. The ward is fantastic!! It definitely brings quite the variety of ethnicity too. We've got spanish, African American, white, Canadians, etc. It's fun ha!

Elder Allen is a good guy. Has some odd quirks about him. But is a good guy. Really good at teaching and using analogies and really cares about the people. He has the personality that they just eat up and people just like to work with him. He is really smart in the scriptures. I feel quite stupid when it comes to the scriptures compared to him but gives me a good opportunity to learn from him and increase in my knowledge.

Well, let's start off with Stephen. Stephen McCloskey was tracted into by Elder Allen and Hirschi about 3 months ago or so. He began to preach to the missionaries that he is Catholic. But he knows that the Catholics have messed up. So he is only Catholic because that is where Jesus Christ gave his authority too. But he thinks that they have slowly twisted things and he has removed that authority. After that, Stephen thinks that God would take away that Authority and would call another Prophet to fix things up. After Elder Allen said... Ummmm That is exactly what we believe in, things started to roll. Every lesson would start out with small talk and then Stephen would start explaining what he believes and Elder Allen would explain to him that is exactly what he believed. Stephen used an analogy to explain how he believes that we are like this bug that starts off in a tree. But he soon falls to the ground and grows. Spends necessary time on the ground growing. Then it goes back up in the tree where it reaches it's fullest potential as that bug and lives with the other bugs. I can't remember the name of the bug. Cicadas. They then explained that is basically the plan of Salvation. All the other lessons followed. They set a baptismal date. This last Tuesday we went and talked to him about keeping the commandments. He then taught us why it's important to keep the commandments. We agreed. He went from reduced coffee drinking to no coffee drinking.  Yesterday, Stephen was baptized. His two sons and daughter want to follow the example of Stephen and be baptized too when they are old enough. God prepares these people. That is soooooooo for sure. Stephen has read sooo much religion and came to know of what he believed in. He just did not know that what he believed in existed. That it was this Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It's amazing to see how he was prepared for the missionaries. He still continues to teach us things!

Andrea... OH Andrea... She is HILARIOUS! Andrea has only met with the missionaries a few times. She is asian. Her really name sounds like Chong Ray Chu! Or something like that. But her "American Name" is Andrea. She is soooooo funny. She is studying at UB in English as a second language. She hopes to go back to China and study it. She lives on the opposite end of China as Cami stayed at. We met with her at some China King restaurant food place and ate lunch and talked with her. Barely were able to pull her away from finals. She is stressing out a ton. She poured us a glass of their free tea. It was funny! We haven't quite gone over the Word of Wisdom yet... But she is starting to understand God and we taught her the importance of the Book of Mormon so that when she goes on vacation over winter break that she will keep reading.

Guo Jin (no idea how to spell it). He is awesome! He is a recent convert of about 8 months. Also Asian. He talked at Stephen's baptism after a little encouragement from us. He talked about Baptism. He is sooo funny! He is getting married this Dec 28. His fiancee flies in on Dec 24 from Italy where she is attending school. Then she finishes up a semester. They are getting married by Bishop. She isn't a member. But she doesn't care that he goes to church. Guo Jin is an awesome member missionary and I'm sure that his future wife will take lessons sometime down the road. Guo Jin just started to plan his wedding. Needless to say, He is a little stressed haha!

Funny stories of the week. Only almost died on the bikes once so this week. Not really almost died. It's just interesting to ride bikes in the city haha! Also had two guys yell at us from across the parking lot "Yo! 2 v 2?? huh?? 2 v 2??" I think they either wanted to fight us or they wanted to do a nice game of Mario Kart. I'm not so sure if it was Mario Kart though...

I'm just crazy excited about this area. Biking and busing allows us to actually get around well. There is work in this area. I'm excited and happy to stay here for a while.

Heading North

I got transferred! North Buffalo!

The actual moving/transfers are tomorrow. So I am still in Cheektowaga until then. So that is definitely exciting! It sounds like I will still be on foot but we have bus passes (yay!)!

But let's talk about the important things here... Silver Rush!! What's the charity this year??? haha!

Anyway, Thanksgiving was great. We got to eat and the Bringhursts and they were great! They made some amazing food! They are really really nice. I got shunned to the kids table with Pierce (one of the kids). So I made the best of it and got a purple crayon/paper to draw with and made a very pretty picture.

I'm definitely sad to leave Elder Russon as he is a great guy! Good companion. But I hear that Elder Bracken Allen is a good guy too. I may be killing him off as this could be his last transfer! But I'm excited to learn from someone who has been around the block or two. He has been in N. Buffalo for like 9 months though! So that's pretty crazy. Usually it is about 6 months per area but with this new Mission President, anything can happen as we found out.

I feel a little bad for Elder Houskeeper. He is a good missionary and he definitely get's taken advantage of and they put him with all the "Fixer upper" missionaries. Poor guy just needs a solid companion that will work with him.

I'm way sad to leave Lancaster ward. I'm going to miss Frank. Great great guy! I don't think I'm going to say goodbye because it sounds too hard. But I'm going to write him a letter about what he has done for me.

Last week was pretty uneventful. The charger broke on my gps so I had to order a new one. I was pretty mad about that. But oh well. It came with a car charger and everything so If I ever end up in a car area I'll have a charger!

Things were going good in Cheektowaga. I feel good leaving it at where it is at because I feel like I've actually been able to be a good influence on it. Opened up a couple of doors and built up a couple relationships with some less active people. Hopefully I can continue to help them out as I am on Facebook. It's a good way to keep up with people in your areas and continue to help them. It'll make my Internet Proselyting time much more effective too now that I will have two areas worth of people that I can keep helping.

It's getting cold here. This week was is supposed to jump up to 40 degrees but the last week or two has been in the 15-25 degree range while sometimes getting up to 32 degrees. North Buffalo will be colder as it is more in the lake effect (I believe).

Not going to lie... I'm not real bummed about leaving our crazy senior couple. Oh the stories we have of them.... They are nuts. Don't grow old and become crazy please. I may send you off to the nuts house.

We got to watch Ephraim's Rescue with the Bringhursts and Zone leaders on thanksgiving (approved). It was great! If you haven't seen it, I definitely recommend it. I might just have mission goggles on though. The acting was regular Church movie quality BUT it's a good story and such.

Hope all is well! All is great in this part of the U.S. I'm excited to try a new area!

Baby, it's cold outside.

It's kind of really cold here. 15 degrees and such. The wind is what kills you. It cuts right through the clothes and says "HELLO!!!!!!!!!" and you're like... oh Geeze. That's cold.

It was an interesting week.

Last P-day was like the best P-day ever. We actually did something and went to Niagara Falls. We didn't have the miles to go (not even close.) but got to snag a ride. It was actually a relaxing P-day. It actually felt like some sort of day off. Even though we set up 2 referrals for other missionaries while we were there. You can't go off and play without God sending you missionary opportunities. Go figure. ha!

Elder Houskeeper was pretty sick this week. He only took like 2 days off but he has been fighting sickness all week. He is pretty stubborn and I had to yell at him to stay home and tell him that Elder Buxton (his companion) and I would cover both of the areas and explained how we would schedule the day to get both done so that he would calm down. It wasn't that hard as we didn't really have set appointments for Cheektowaga and so it was just mostly covering their area.

Elder Houskeeper in a weird turn of events decided that while he was sick he was going to try and poke fun of my slightly larger personal bubble... He kept coming up to me and like wrapping himself around me and saying "Make me feel better!!!" it was pretty funny but still... In my personal bubble. He gets weird when on cold, headache and antibiotic medicines...

We did have a half day where we were able to take the car into Cheektowaga because of Elder Houskeeper being sick. It was nice because we actually were able to see people and do some missionary work with a car. I'm not excited for walking 3 hours to appointments this winter. So far we've been able to ride bikes or get rides. But ya.... It'll happen.

Sunday we actually got to have a real lesson with people! Wooo! A lady from another ward called us up and referred us to her cousin. She set up an appointment for 7:00pm yesterday (Sunday) for us to go teach with her. We showed up at the house to see her cousin and his wife sitting on the couch watching the Sabres game and her no where in site. They let us in and we had a lesson but we were all confused on where the lady was and they were caught a little offguard as they didn't 100% know that we were coming. So that is some actual solid potential investigators. Well... As solid as it gets!

I don't have any cool stories of walking up to a random person and baptizing them right there on the spot or a story of almost dying but miraculously surviving. Just little miracles here and there. Still trying and giving it my all 110% and trying to be perfectly obedient.

Hope all is well back home! Hopefully I don't become a Popsicle out here.
